The moisture soil content below which plants are unable to absorb water fast enough to fulfill their needs, therefore irreversibly wilting.

Example

As a result of water consumption and soil evaporation processes it starts to decrease until it reaches permanent wilting point (PWP) and it gradually displays more resistance to extraction 172. PWP is reached, therefore, when the water is held so tightly in the soil that the plant cannot extract it.
