Agriculture | n. phr.
a disease that is caused by a bacterium (Pseudomonas savastanoi) that comes into the tree through its wounds and which is characterized by the appearance of small brownish tumours.

Example

Olive knot can kill trees if infections occur on and girdle Fthe trunks of young trees through injury by mechanical harvesters. It reduces tree productivity by girdling twigs and branches and causing dieback. Bacteria survive in the knots and are readily spread by water at all times of the year.

Additional information

If the plant becomes infested, the disease will not influence the quality of the oil, but it will produce strange-tasting oils if the fruit is affected. No definitive control method exists against the olive knot, which is why it is advisable to adopt preventive measures, for example, avoiding branch-beating as a harvest method and performing selective pruning
